I’ve seen a few reports indicating that the recession could be good for virtual worlds – as more companies seek to replace expensive travel with virtual events. Entertainment based virtual worlds will not necessarily benefit though – and its an area that has a lot of competition. To name just a few: Second Life, IMVU, SmallWorlds, Home, Twinity, Kaneva, Active Worlds and There.
Well, not There anymore… as this relative old-timer has announced that they’ll be closing their doors next week.
As with the close of Metaplace, this will hurt some developers who’ve been investing in the platform – and emphasises the need to take care when choosing which virtual world(s) to invest time and money in – for business or education.
